Biosphere Reserve Swabian Alb
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
The Schwäbische Alb Biosphere Area is an 85,270-hectare biosphere reserve that covers large parts of the central Schwäbische Alb and its foreland. It was established in January 2008 as a biosphere area of the state of Baden-Württemberg. Since May 2009, the area has also been recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
What is meant by biosphere reserve?
A biosphere reserve is a model region initiated by UNESCO, in which sustainable development is to be exemplarily realized in ecological, economic, and social terms. A biosphere reserve thus optimally combines nature conservation with the needs of the population.
Reutlingen: Major city in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
Reutlingen is one of the few European large cities located within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Parts of the districts Gönningen, Ohmenhausen, Betzingen, as well as the Wasenwald, belong to the biosphere area. The Listhof Environmental Education Center is the competence center for environmental education, renewable energies, and biological diversity (biodiversity) in the Swabian Alb biosphere area.
Environmental Education Center Listhof
In close proximity to the Environmental Education Center lies the Listhof Nature Reserve. Until 1992, the area was used by the French military as a training ground.
Become a Partner
The partner initiative stands for close, trustful cooperation between the office of the biosphere reserve and locally based individuals, businesses, and service providers with a tourism offering. The basis is a quality promise, which is based on an agreed-upon catalog of criteria and whose compliance is regularly checked.

Biosphere Week
The Biosphere Week has been an integral part and one of the annual highlights in the event calendar of the Biosphere Reserve Swabian Alb for 12 years, and is equally popular among residents and guests. The goal of Biosphere Week is to make the first biosphere reserve in Baden-Württemberg understandable and experienceable in all its various facets – and with all the senses!
