Reutlingen historical: The Tübinger Gate
The Tübinger Gate: Reutlingen's Historic City Gate
The Tübinger Tor is one of the oldest and most well-known structures in Reutlingen. It was built in 1235 during the construction of the medieval city wall and was formerly known as the "Mettmannstor." This gate once led the important trade route towards Tübingen.
The tower still impresses today with its massive corner and bossage stones and the half-timbered superstructure from the year 1330, which gives the building its characteristic finish. It was one of originally four large city gates that served to defend and control access to the city.
In the Middle Ages, a watchman lived on the Tübinger Gate. His most important task was to warn the city of fires – because the greatest danger came less from enemies than from fire. He therefore constantly kept an eye out for rising smoke.
Today, the room in the upper part of the tower is no longer used as a guard post but serves as a representative reception room for the city administration – with a special view over the city.
The Tübinger Tor is a landmark of Reutlingen – and at the same time a living piece of city history that connects the past and the present.
