Reutlingen burns – 300 years since the city fire

In the year 2026, Reutlingen commemorates under the motto"Reutlingen is burning"for the 300th anniversary of the city fire of 1726. Exhibitions, guided tours, theater, music, art activities, and creative shop windows make the history of this formative event visible and tangible, while also showing how important fire prevention and solidarity were then and are today.

When Reutlingen was ablaze

FromSeptember 23 to 25, 1726A devastating fire destroyed large parts of Reutlingen. Starting from a residential building, the flames spread rapidly: four-fifths of the houses within the city walls and nearly all public buildings were destroyed – over 1,200 families lost their homes.

A story that will not be forgotten

With exhibitions, events, and special activities, the city fire is made visible in the commemorative year. It is not only about remembering the disaster but also about demonstrating the importance of fire prevention, rescue, and collective action both today and in the past.

The Copperplate Engraving of the City Fire

The Copperplate Engraving“O Reutlingen, Your Sin, Your Fire”by Gabriel Bodenehr depicts the dramatic events of the city fire of 1726. The depiction created in 1727 commemorates the destruction of the city, the great willingness to help, and the subsequent reconstruction. Today, the historic work can be seen in the Heimatmuseum Reutlingen.
